I battled with this title. It’s got to be the longest I’ve ever done. I hope it is. I have an aversion for too many words. But this is an important question worth becoming my title here.
So, let me ask you: What if what you’re doing right now isn’t what you’re supposed to be doing?
I’m quite certain that you’ve heard stories and come across quotes of remarkable individuals who gave their last words on their death beds. Wishing they had done more than what was asked. Or risked more than what was necessary. Perhaps given more than what was required. Or loved more than what was expected. The “what if’s” that will never be answered. The “what could have beens” that will never be experienced.
So many words for it but really, these are nothing but regrets.
In my previous posts on Identity Series, I talked about the two P’s on life purpose. The first one is precision which when acted upon, will lead to the second P, productivity.
There are individuals who live out their years on earth doing work that aren’t for them. Perhaps they were enslaved. Others may be indebted to an obligation. Day after day they show up for work and yes, they do get paid. But somewhere inside the recesses of their souls, they’re crying out. Tragically, some have lost that cry.
On a personal note, I would rather see a man pained and frustrated than to see him placid, pain free and no longer in touch with his dream. The pain is an indication that his inner fire and passion hasn’t totally died. Any form of life within is worth celebrating.
If you’re feeling like a round peg in a square hole right now, perhaps you should start to ask if what you’re doing is what you’re supposed to be doing.
I cannot say this enough: we have our built in alarm systems that go off when we shouldn’t, couldn’t or should and must. Our body, soul and spirit have their personal ways of speaking to us. We often run into problems when we refuse to listen.
If you have a sense of dissatisfaction or unhappiness in what you are doing, perhaps your heart is telling you to start remembering that dream. The one you used to tinker with as a child. The one that you thought you’d be when you grow up.
But like many stories, we did grow up and so did our responsibilities that came with real bills. Instead of going for that thing that we wanted to become, we ended up settling for what’s available.
Our believing has been watered down to just existing. You can change all that now. I don’t mean for you to just get up your desk, quit your job and ignore commitments. But if you were to chase after your real dreams, one day, when the time is right, you’re gonna have to.
Dream chasing has a prerequisite and that is the entire you. It will need your whole heart’s passion, your entire mind’s devotion and your body’s action. One without the other will not work.
For now, do the work at hand with all your heart. Give that job the devotion it deserves. Earn your wages and put away bigger savings. Curb your expenses and cut back on the gourmet coffee. Commit to living a life of austerity. Something many people don’t enjoy. But for now, break away from the popularity and choose to live like most people won’t so one day you can live the life most people can’t.
As soon as the work clock strikes, revisit your dream. Go back to the drawing table and create the vision. Plan. Consult. Plan some more. Water your dream with positive words and prayers. Surround yourself with dreamers and forward thinkers. Acquire new knowledge. Learn new skills. Adapt. Consult. Listen. Watch. Learn. Especially from people who have made it. And those who have failed. Find the difference.
Then do it.
Failure to act on your dream is abdicating your life purpose. It’s existing without fully living. In a child’s language, it’s playing dead. You owe it to yourself and to your Maker to give life your very best shot.
At first attempt, you may fail. But so did many successes before you. Thomas Edison took 10,000 mistakes ’til he hit the right one. I’m sure that when he was about to pass away, he was pleased with what he has done. What a gift to mankind. What a life of significance.
Because he was doing what he was supposed to be doing.
